09/05/2013: Professor Hazel Hall leads the programme committee of iDocQ 2013

In her role of Convener of the ESRC Scottish Graduate School of Social Science Doctoral Training Centre's Information Science Pathway, Professor Hazel Hall has taken the lead in the setting up and management of the programme committee of iDocQ 2013.

iDocQ is an annual one-day doctoral colloquium for PhD students working in information science and related areas. This year it takes place on Monday 24th June at Robert Gordon University.

The iDocQ programme committee comprises a student representative from each of the four Information Science Pathway institutions: Edinburgh Napier, Glasgow, Strathclyde, and Robert Gordon universities. This year's Edinburgh Napier rep is Lynn Killick.

Registration is free to UK students, with a number of travel bursaries also available. Hazel Hall has posted further details on the event to her blog at http://hazelhall.org.

Professor Bill Buchanan has accepted an invite to present at 2013 Annual Computing, ICT and Digital Media Conference on Monday 17 June at the City of Glasgow College. The proposed title is:

Let’s Get More Pupils/Students into Computing/ICT

and it will cover:

There are so many opportunities at the present time in Computing, and we cannot attract enough graduates to fill the demand from the jobs market. When companies demand graduates not in the one’s, or the ten’s, but in the hundreds there is a massive change going on. Along with this there are so many routes for a graduate to take, and few professions can offer such opportunities. Unfortunately there seems to be several barriers to attracting pupils into computing, and this presentation will outline some of these, and show some results from previous dissemination events. As an overview, the presentation will also show some examples of how universities can help in the engagement of pupils, including work around presenting Cyber cracking and in making Computing fun, while presenting the opportunities that exist in the jobs market.

The IIDI research team working on information sharing across the public sector, and on governance and trust architectures, has just released a new survey on electronic health records. The aim of the survey is to evaluate individuals' perceptions on the usage of electronic health records.

30/04/2013: Informing the Good Society (InGSoc): New Centre for Social Informatics Project Starts Today

The AHRC-funded Informing the Good Society project begins this week on 1 May. Dr Eve Forrest, postdoctoral research fellow and Lynn Killick, PhD student, will be taking up their new roles, based at the IIDI premises. Several members of the InGSoc external advisory board will also be joining us for a first meeting. InGSoc, whose principal investigator is Dr Alistair Duff, will last for 3 years and will work to make a major contribution to the field of information policy. 29/04/2013: Caldicott review shows that the IIDI research team's vision can become a reality

A research team at Edinburgh Napier, including Prof Bill Buchanan, Dr Lu Fan, Owen Lo, Omair Uthmani, Niall Burns, Alistair Lawson, Richard Lewis and Prof Christoph Thuemmler, has been focusing on creating information sharing infrastructures across the public sector with strong governance, and with a focus reducing risks and on holistic care.

The Caldicott review has now shown that the work can become a reality, and that there is a need for more sharing across the public sector.

The research team has been working within several research projects, including within health and social care, and also in information sharing between the Scottish Police and their community partners.

While the barriers will take a while to bring down, it now looks like there will be a move towards citizens getting access to their own records.

The work has involved the integration of many partners, including Microsoft, Sitekit, miiCard, mydex, Imperial College, Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, and many others.

The safi.re team will exhibit its novel governance product at EIE 2013 on 9 May 2013 at the Assembly Rooms on George Street, Edinburgh. At present safi.re focuses on providing trust and governance applied to data access, and is being trialled with a number of projects.

This event provides the team with the opportunity to showcase its unique product range.
