Tom McEwan was one of the organisers of, and represented the UK Human Computer Interaction community in, an international workshop within the world's leading HCI conference CHI2013 in Paris. This is part of an on ongoing effort to connect the outcomes of research with public policy making, which has already resulted in several publications in the ACM Digital Library. This brings together Tom's roles for BCS Interaction and BCS Entrepreneurs specialist groups with his role as the Scottish representative on the BCS Government Relations Group, and his work to create a European organisation to support human centred innovation.

24/05/2013: Invited to co-edit the proceedings of HCI2013, the 27th International British Computer Society Human Computer Interaction Conference: The Internet of things

Having served on every British HCI conference committee since 2001, co-editing in 2005, 2007 and 2010, Tom has been invited to be one of the editors of this year's proceedings. This is in addition to his role as co-Chair for Works in Progress.
The full papers at British HCI have long been regarded as the equivalent of journal papers, and while past proceedings have only been available at great expense via international publishers, Tom drove the migration of the proceedings into that "greenest" of academic publication outlets - BCS EWIC, with the proceedings also freely available via the ACM Digital Library

In his capacity as Deputy Chair of the BCS Entrepreneurs Specialist Group, a member of the BCS Academy Research Committee, and as Director of Quality for the School of Computing, Tom has been participating in a number of events this year to address the growing need to improve entrepreneurship and innovation in research and the curriculum. The Wilson Review is one manifestation of this, although there have been similar efforts in both Scotland and the EU for much longer. Tom continues to press for more human-centred approaches to innovation, the subject of recent publications. The Centre for interaction Design had a stand at Digital Scotland on 22nd May. Opened by Deputy First Minister, Nichola Sturgeon, Digital Scotland attracted over 400 delegates from across Scotland to discuss the digital future of Scotland.
