09/05/2013: Professor Hazel Hall leads the programme committee of iDocQ 2013

In her role of Convener of the ESRC Scottish Graduate School of Social Science Doctoral Training Centre's Information Science Pathway, Professor Hazel Hall has taken the lead in the setting up and management of the programme committee of iDocQ 2013.

iDocQ is an annual one-day doctoral colloquium for PhD students working in information science and related areas. This year it takes place on Monday 24th June at Robert Gordon University.

The iDocQ programme committee comprises a student representative from each of the four Information Science Pathway institutions: Edinburgh Napier, Glasgow, Strathclyde, and Robert Gordon universities. This year's Edinburgh Napier rep is Lynn Killick.

Registration is free to UK students, with a number of travel bursaries also available. Hazel Hall has posted further details on the event to her blog at http://hazelhall.org.

22/04/2013: Hazel Hall presents to the Royal Commission on Ancient and Historial Monuments of Scotland

On 22nd April Professor Hazel Hall delivered an invited presentation entitled "Sharing the DREaM bluprint: lessons in community network building from the DREaM project" as part of the research seminar series of the Royal Commission on Ancient and Historial Monuments of Scotland.

19/03/2013: Centre for Social Informatics team conducts market research into training provision for the library, information and knowledge sector

A team from the Centre for Social Informatics has been commissioned by the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP) to conduct research into training provision for the library, information and knowledge sector. The project work, which runs from March to May 2013, is concerned with:

1. Mapping current training provision
2. Identifying gaps in this training provision
3. Developing an options appraisal for the delivery of training by CILIP

The work is led by Professor Hazel Hall with project team members Christine Irving and Peter Cruickshank.

The first phase of the project includes collecting data from library, information and knowledge professionals on their training needs and delivery preferences in a survey that is open until 09:00 on Monday 25th March 2013.

A full report of the recent Open Knowledge Foundation (OKFN) meet-up hosted by the Centre for Social Informatics and held at the Edinburgh Napier Merchiston campus on the evening of 5 March is now available on the Open Knowledge Foundation Edinburgh web site. The report was written by Nicola Osborne, Social Media Officer of EDINA.

13/03/2013: Hazel Hall presents research seminar at the Institute for Research in Social Sciences, University of Ulster

This evening Professor Hazel Hall is delivering a paper entitled Leadership in libraries: tying library and information science research to practice at the Institute for Research in Social Sciences, University of Ulster.

The presentation draws on Hall's work with the Library and Information Science Research Research Coalition, and the associated DREaM and RiLIES projects. DREaM was concerned with research methods training for library and information professionals, and the RiLIES projects focussed on (1) research impact and (2) resources to support library and information professionals in the consumption and execution of research. This work was completed over a three year period between 2009 and 2012.

Peter Cruickshank organised a recent Open Knowledge Foundation (OKFN) meet-up at the Edinburgh Napier Merchiston campus on the evening of 5 March.

Eilidh MacGlone on publishing film metadata for the Scottish Screen Archive
Claire Turnbull on open data and the Scottish Parliament

Peter Winstanley on linking triplestores with XML databases
Robert Raeside on public data for studying employment
Ewan Klein on what happened on Open Data Day, and future plans for the Edinburgh OKFN group

OKFN meet-ups are friendly and informal evenings for people to get together to share and argue all areas of openness. Discussions at these events focus on open knowledge and open data - from politics and philosophy to practicalities of theory and practice.
