Dr. Zhiyuan Tan is a Lecturer at the School of Computing. He was awarded his PhD degree by University of Technology Sydney, Australia in 2014. Prior to joining Edinburgh Napier University, he had been a postdoctoral researcher in the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Twente since 2014.
His research background is in network security and pattern recognition. Primarily, he is interested in bringing knowledge about pattern recognition and machine learning to the tasks of behavior modelling and algorithm design in the domain of network security. Representative tasks include network traffic characterisation, detection of intrusive traffic behaviors in a complex network, malicious packet payload contents discovery, detection of suspicious attempts on a host system and selection of optimal features from a large-scale feature space.
Dr. Tan has a long history of collaboration. He has active collaborations with fellow faculty at the University of Twente and fellow cyber security faculty from Eindhoven University of Technology. He also has long-term collaborations with international acclaimed scholars from UTS, CSIRO and University of New South Wales.
His research findings have been published in world leading journals such as IEEE Transactions on Computers, IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems, IEEE Transactions on Cloud Computing, Future Generation Computer Systems, Computer Networks and in prestigious international conferences including IEEE GLOBECOM, IEEE TrustCom and ICONIP.
