Fancy Bears

On 13 September 2016, the Fancy Bears website hosted information on the usage of certificates of approval for therapeutic use, and where the drug usage of US Athletes was outlined. This includes details on Simone Biles, Elena Delle Donne, and Serena and Venus Williams.

It is likely the hackers used a spear phishing attack to get access to ADAMS (Anti-Doping Administration and Management System). The likely mode is to send a user an email with a link, and for them to be tricked into entering their user name and password into a fake site.

In August, Yuliya Stepanova’s password for ADAMS was used to access her account on ADAMS. Yuliya was a  whistleblower for WADA’s Commission on widespread doping in Russian athletics.
