Zonefox, a cyber security spin-out from The Cyber Academy at Edinburgh Napier University, has been showcased by SDI (Scottish Development International), and for its route from PhD (with Dr Jamie Graves) to the innovative product which is now being used in many companies.

Overall Zonefox focuses on detecting data loss within organisations, and addresses a problem that many organisations such as Sony, DNC, and LinkedIn have faced in the past, and especially focusing on insider threats.

Their focus, overall, is:

“[To] help our customers protect their reputation and status in the market, and help them to understand what’s going on inside their organisation”

Support for innovation

The spin-out has been supported by a range of funding and support, including from Scottish Enterprise (SE), Scottish Development International (SDI) and the Scottish Investment Bank (SIB). This support showcases that Scotland is an excellent place to setup a business, and where companies can access the vibrant financial sector in places such as Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Technology hub

Currently the company are based in the shadow of Edinburgh Castle, within a technology hub known as Codebase. Jamie outlines:

“Edinburgh’s one of those cities where you can walk out of university and into a job,” says Jamie. “And it’s a brilliant place to live and work. Compared with London or Silicon Valley, the relative cost – for businesses and employees – is lower, but the city still attracts world-class talent.”

On his LinkedIn blog, Prof Bill Buchanan outlines:

"We have two highly successful spin-out companies, based on a shared vision and core research, and we are just finalising the last details of a third one. One of the great things, is that you see them flourish in ways than you could never imagine, and eventually they push themselves forward in a way that academia would only constrain them."
