The work of Dr Lu Fan, Prof Bill Buchanan and Dr Owen Lo (who are part of The Cyber Academy research team), in collaboration with Payfont, has been awarded "Innovation of the Year" at the Scottish Knowledge Exchange awards.

Security and Robustness in a Cyber Age

Overall it uses advanced cryptography in order to create a cloud-based infrastructure which is both 100% secure and which is robust against large-scale data outages/corruption.

The research work thus addresses issues around storing data within cloud infrastructures, especially within public cloud spaces, and in protecting against a large-scale destruction of a data infrastructure.

The core ideas were developed within an Innovation Voucher project, and has since developed through a range of funded research projects.

It now includes a joint patent application between Payfont and The Cyber Academy research team at Edinburgh Napier, along with the successful completion of a SMART research project.

At present the team have progressed the work towards  large-scale research funding, with an aim to build one of the most advanced cloud architectures in the World.

The project was supported by Dr Aileen Wood.

The Cyber Academy

The Cyber Academy has an extensive track record around innovation, including two major spin-out companies (Zonefox and Symphonic Trust), with another spin-out to be launched in May 2016. They work with a wide range of companies and law enforcement agencies, and have a current partnership with HPE and RSA in building an advanced training infrastructure for Cyber Security ([vSoC])
