Abstract
Several different type of intellectual property apply to software, including copyright, patents, trade marks and trade secrets. An overview of the application of these to software will be given, with a focus on copyright and patents. The debate about software patentability and the value of patents in general will be explored. Practical aspects of patents in a University environment will be covered including the role of the 2kT team, whether to patent or keep secret, licensing and fund raising and the deterrence value and use as a marketing tool.
