TDWG Core Ontology

10/04/2006 - 31/08/2006

This project aims to progress the development of Taxonomic Concept schema (TCS) in line with Taxonomic Database Working gorup (TDWG) architecture and documentation.

This work is to ensure that:
  • Best current practice is followed in developing TDWG standards
  • TCS is documented according to 2006 TDWG standards
The activities include:
  1. Prepare a standard suite of documentation to TDWG standards. This includes a TCS charter and a primer. Transfer relevant information from existing TCS Wiki to new TDWG wiki.
  2. Organise and host a meeting of selected TDWG sub-group members to design a draft TDWG core ontology that incorporates the main concepts within DwC, TCS, ABCD and SDD
  3. Convert an existing dataset to a domain ontology derived from the core ontology.
  4. Develop a prototype tool for demonstrating an example of linking  GUIDs during the process of converting the test dataset to the ontology.
TDWG Core Ontology is a Research Charities & Trusts project funded by TDWG/GBIF (Betty & Gordon Moore Foundation). Carried out in collaboration with and others. For further information please refer to
