Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) and the Internet of Things (IoT) have broad applications in many industrial systems for monitoring physical or environmental conditions, such as temperature, sound, pressure, and pollution level. Research and applications in WSNs and intelligent industrial systems continue to grow. The integration of wireless sensor networks and industrial systems can provide existing industrial systems with many advantages, such as low cost, rapid deployment, self-organization, intelligent controlling, and processing capability. Research advances in industrial wireless sensor networks (IWSNs) promise to play a significant role in creating more reliable, efficient, stable, flexible, and application-centric industrial systems.

A WSN typically consists of a number of sensor nodes with sensing, computing, and telecommunication capability. Different from other application scenarios, if sensors are deployed in industrial fields, firstly centralized controlling can be very difficult; thus distributed coordination and management become crucial for obtaining high-quality information about industrial environments. Secondly, in harsh industrial environments, it may be very hazardous to replace batteries, and the power supply can be highly limited; hence innovative energy-efficient technologies, such as sleeping schemes, become very important to improve the lifetime of WSNs. Lastly, communication bandwidth can be a scare resource due to the dense deployment of sensors in industrial fields; therefore, spectrum-efficient communication technologies, for example, relaying communication, become increasingly important.

This special issue is focused on the development, adoption, and application of wireless sensor networks for the industrial environment with its unique requirements.
