Dr Bruce Ryan is a Researcher within the Centre for Social Informatics. Following completion of his PhD, he spent 15 years in educational publishing before returning to study for an MSc in Information Systems Development at Edinburgh Napier University.

While undertaking his Masters studies, and following successful completion of the course in early 2014, Bruce has worked as a Research Associate on a number of research projects within the Centre for Social Informatics, mainly focused on the use of technology for democratic engagement. He has also been involved in library and information science research, notably the CILIP/ARA Workforce Mapping Project, completed in 2015.

Bruce's main research and personal interests coalesce around the use of ICT in hyperlocal government, centering on Scottish Community Councils. Facets of these interests include the actual technologies that are, could and should be used; how elected hyperlocal representatives learn them; whether, and if so, how Communities of Practice form around such matters; how hyperlocal governments develop and learn in general.
